We bought a house!

Hi everyone reading this blog. This is my on-going (hopefully) update on the home research and home improvements Jai and I do this summer. Our house is over 50 years old, so it's been through a major earthquake and like most older homes in the area, has a little termite damage. The unexpected pros we discovered about the house after the purchase are: copper piping, redwood support structure, hardwood floors under the carpet, central AC and a sprinkler system (throw in cookie-baking granny across the street and cute puppy of neighbour :) ). The cons we learned after the inspection were that one of the gigantic antennas (antennae?) on the house is connected to a gas line (genius!), the previous occupants let water damage build up in one corner of the house, and one of the two (useless) fireplaces has an unstable chimney. The other fireplace is a monstrosity of stone occupying our precious future "TV" corner. Why are fireplaces so popular in homes out here? Hello! That's what central heating is for...

  1. our place was built in 1904. :P
our story is that we got into a TIC of our neighbor who bought the place in 2007 and entirely gutted and renovated everything (liek what you are doing!) and even added in giant steel beams for seismic upgrades, etc. So we lucked out and found this place as the market was down and it was very hard for him to move the TIC, even though it's a great deal. We just had to wait for the deck and the garage to be built, but that's almost done now!

Will keep reading your posts coz even though we dont'[ have to do any major renos, would be interesting to learn about it!!
